The cradle of modern Rioja style since 1852
Marqués de Murrieta is one of Spain’s oldest and most important wineries, founded in 1852 by Luciano Murrieta, Marqués de Murrieta. He was the first to bring the Bordeaux approach to ageing and keeping wine to Rioja, laying the foundations of the style now regarded as the region’s classic. The winery is set on the Finca Ygay estate — the historic heart of Rioja and the only single vineyard of its size in the region.
Finca Ygay covers about 300 hectares, around 80 of them under vine, surrounded by the Sierra de Cantabria mountains. All Marqués de Murrieta wines are made exclusively from estate-grown grapes, so every step can be controlled — from vine to bottle. The main varieties are Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, plus Viura for the white wines.
The winery combines its historic heritage with advanced technology. A modern gravity-flow winery minimises mechanical handling of the grapes, fermentation takes place in steel tanks with precise temperature control, and the wines are aged in the estate’s own American and French oak barrels.
Castillo Ygay, a restored 19th-century castle, houses the ageing halls and the wine library — a place where time becomes a key part of the style.
Marqués de Murrieta is known for long-lived wines with great ageing potential. Nothing is rushed to market — each bottle is released only when it is fully ready. The winery also pays close attention to sustainable farming, care for the soil and protecting the estate’s ecosystem.
